San Marcos, Texas's First Baptist Church NBC has made headlines by appointing its youngest pastor in history, Pastor Colby Cotton, who has also spearheaded the church's latest name change, signaling a new beginning for the historic congregation. The church, which traces its origins back to 1866 and was originally known as the Colored Baptist Church Zion, has weathered its share of hardships, including an arson orchestrated by the KKK, but has remained a pillar of the San Marcos community for nearly 160 years, according to FOX 7 Austin.
Cotton, whose musical talents shone brightly through his work with the Texas State Gospel Version Association Choir, and his service in various Central Texas churches have now returned home, to lead what will be known as the New Zion Design Baptist Church, he told FOX 7 Austin, symbolizing a resonant acknowledgment of the church's past, and an adaptive push towards the future Cotton adamantly believes in claiming, "I want people to experience the difference," Cotton said, "I want people to say, you know what? When I was at that church, my life changed."
The new pastor recounts a history rife with resilience; the church stood for seven years before it was burned to the ground by the KKK, a building once lost to flames and hate now stands blocks away on South Mitchell Street, proudly next to its historical marker, commemorating its status as the first Black church in the city. "Nobody can ever take that away from us. We were here. And we're going to be here, forever," Cotton affirmed in his conversation with FOX 7 Austin.
The reverence for the church's past is evident in the planned name change to New Zion Design Baptist Church, a move that honors its history while stepping boldly into a future where Cotton's youthful energy promises to engage and inspire the San Marcos community, building on a legacy of faith and fellowship despite the obstacles and shifts in societal tides over the years, the church's commitment to its people looks forward with an enduring spirit that is both reflective of its storied past and eager for the transformative growth that lies ahead, Cotton explained, as reported by BNN Breaking.
