Houston's battle against crime on the notorious Bissonnet Track is escalating with the new installation of gates—part of an evolving strategy to clamp down on the street's infamous illegal activities. The Houston Police Department has announced that these gates will be closed during the night and reopened in the morning, a measure aimed at disrupting the longstanding issues on this stretch of Southwest Houston plagued by prostitution and human trafficking.
According to KPRC 2, gates were installed as the latest in a series of measures taken by the city to tackle crime in the area. Last year, the closure of Plainfield Street and Centre Parkway, between Bissonnet and the Southwest Freeway every night, had already seen a drastic reduction in crime according to local business owners. "I don't even see anybody on the street anymore," one business owner said, reflecting the impact of the police's previous actions.
The effort to install gates is a collective push involving local businesses, officials, various agencies, and residents concerned with safety and the well-being of the community. This initiative reflects the city's ongoing commitment to addressing and mitigating criminal activities that have marred Bissonnet Street's reputation.
In 2023, the HPD's Westside Division Commander, Reece Hardy, emphasized the need for continued efforts. "We are looking at ways and strategies to be able to continue this moving forward," he told KPRC 2 in 2023, highlighting the city's resolve. Meanwhile, the Houston Police Department's announcement via post on X of the new gate installations reiterates the sustained collaboration and the significant steps being taken to curb illegal activities in the area.
Strategically installed gates will be closed at night and reopened in the morning to prevent illegal activity on Bissonnet.
