A man has been slapped with charges after a violent confrontation on Lockwood Drive that left his girlfriend fighting for her life, officials said Friday. According to a news release from the Houston Police Department, Charles Lee Jones, 64, now faces charges for aggravated assault of a family member.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday around 8:35 p.m, spiraled out of a heated argument between Jones and the 42-year-old woman, detailed by HPD's Major Assault & Family Violence Division Detective A. Chheav. Charged in the XXX State District Court, Jones's role was substantial enough for the District Attorney’s Office to press charges.

An unopened can became a blunt weapon in Jones's hands, striking a bystander who attempted to intervene when Jones and the victim were engaged in the dispute. The woman, in an attempt to flee, was pushed by Jones onto the path of an oncoming vehicle, resulting in her critical injuries. Rushed to a nearby hospital by the Houston Fire Department paramedics, she remains in critical condition.

Officers arriving at the scene managed to detain Jones with no further incidents occurring. "Nearby witnesses saw the incident and attempted to stop Jones" Detective A. Chheav reported, detailing how the suspect was arrested at the scene. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office, briefed on the details, would later charge Jones.
