Welcome Wilson Sr., the trailblazing Houston real estate developer and influential former chairman of the University of Houston System Board of Regents, passed away at his home on Friday at the age of 95, the university announced. Wilson, who led the Welcome Group LLC., a key player in commercial real estate with assets spread across the nation, left a lasting imprint not only on the skyline but also on the community with his penchant for philanthropy and education advocacy.
Before ascending to the ranks of real estate giants, his journey began in Brownsville, Texas and after the trek to Houston, Wilson capped his academic tenure as a University of Houston graduate by marrying his college sweetheart, that same auspicious day in 1949, he launched into a naval officer role, serving two years in Japan during the Korean War, his life's odyssey was as sprawling as the very developments he would come to pioneer, his legacy speckled with civic triumphs from witnessing atom and hydrogen bomb tests to his commendable work of desegregating Houston's lunch counters in the '60s. From the shrewd negotiating rooms where city ordinances were challenged to the lush green plots of master-planned communities like Jamaica Beach and Tiki Island that bear his signature, Welcome Wilson's mark on the cityscape and the social form of Houston is indelible.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Wilson was at the forefront of real estate development in Galveston County during the 1950s and 60s, shaping areas that are now fully-fledged cities. Wilson's commitment to Houston and its future was further evidenced by his support of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance and during his tenure as chairman, his pivotal recruitment of Renu Khator as president of the University of Houston, a move that has been lauded as laying the groundwork for the institution's contemporary success.
In a heartfelt testament to his mentorship and leadership, Renu Khator, chancellor of the University of Houston System and president of the university, expressed her sorrow and admiration saying "Welcome Wilson was a true titan whom I was honored to work with and humbled to call a friend," as quoted in a release by Click2Houston. Current UH System Chairman Tilman J. Fertitta echoed these sentiments, recognizing Wilson as a "pillar of the community," whose fervent support of education and the university carved a legacy marked by excellence. These accolades serve as a testament to a man who, given the ease to rest upon his achievements chose instead, to engage tirelessly in the spirited work of fostering growth within his alma mater and the wider Houston area.
Wilson is survived by his wife of 74 years Joanne, their four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, with arrangements for a funeral service to honor his memory still pending. Wilson's family was with him during his peaceful passing, including his eldest daughter Cindy, who recounted the warm memories and life lessons imparted by her father. Through his family, numerous developments, public service, and the thousands of lives he impacted, Welcome Wilson Sr.'s vision for a better generation is a flame that continues to kindle in the heart of Houston.
