Residents of Houston and surrounding regions are bracing for a weekend of potentially severe weather, as forecasted by the National Weather Service (NWS). Today's outlook points to likely showers and thunderstorms before noon, followed by a possible resurgence in the afternoon, according to the detailed forecast at National Weather Service. The NWS alerts to a 60% chance of precipitation with new rainfall amounts ranging from a half to three-quarters of an inch possible.

The situation won't let up come nightfall, as the chances for showers and thunderstorms dip slightly to 40%, maintaining a pattern of patchy fog and overcast skies. This dreary weather is predicted to lead tomorrow, with forecasters expecting enhanced storm activity that could give rise to severe weather conditions. According to The Storm Prediction Center, "There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across parts of the Sabine River Valley, Lower Mississippi Valley, and Central Gulf Coast states."

The National Weather Service in Houston, in a post from X, warned of widespread showers and thunderstorms from today through Sunday night, cautioning that the storms could produce "locally heavy rainfall, resulting in localized street flooding." Residents are urged to remain vigilant regarding the forecast and to avoid flooded roadways.

Tomorrow, there is a 60 percent likelihood of showers and thunderstorms prior to 4 pm, continuing the trend of mixed and tempestuous weather with potential patches of fog before clearing slightly. In an effort by the Storm Prediction Center to provide early warning, they state, "A tornado threat is also expected to develop across the lower Mississippi Valley during the afternoon, with the threat gradually spreading eastward into the central Gulf Coast states by evening." These early forecasts bid the residents to prepare for a tumultuous culmination to their weekend.

However, the severe weather threat comes with a couple of asterisks. According to the forecast discussion by the Storm Prediction Center, the mid-level jet is forecast to remain well to the west of the severe threat area, and the low-level jet is expected to stay relatively weak during the event, introducing uncertainties concerning the severity of the impending storms.

As a new week dawns, the forecast suggests a shift to clearer skies, with partly sunny to sunny conditions and a gradual rise in temperature beginning on Monday. With cleaner weather on the horizon, Houstonians might soon find solace after the stormy weekend.
