Houston authorities are on the hunt for a hit-and-run driver who left a man for dead on the city's north side late Thursday night. The Houston Police Department (HPD) said the incident occurred around 10:25 p.m. when the victim, whose name is yet to be released pending identification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was struck by a black Honda Pilot as he crossed the North Loop West service road. According to City of Houston, the male was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.
The heartless driver didn't stop to render aid or call for help, fleeing instead eastbound on the North Loop West service road. Sergeant D. Griffiths and Officer S. Bouarar from HPD's Vehicular Crimes Division are leading the investigation. The authorities have turned to the public, urging anyone with information to step forward, hoping perhaps a conscience may compel a witness or even the guilt-ridden driver to unburden themselves of what has become a fatal weight.
In an all too familiar scene of tragedy and evasion, the city must now grapple with the fallout of an individual's choice to shirk responsibility at the direst of moments. The perpetrator remains at large following the deadly collision, and police are keen on delivering justice. The request for public assistance is a clarion call, an appeal to the shared humanity that courses unseen beneath the sprawling metropolis.
HPD's Hit and Run unit can be contacted at 713-247-4065 by anyone who holds even a shred of information about the elusive driver of the black Honda Pilot. In a bid to penetrate the veil of anonymity that shields the wanted individual, Crime Stoppers has also offered an avenue - reachable at 713-222-TIPS - for anonymous tips that might bring some semblance of closure.
