Robert Reid, a name synonymous with '80s Houston Rockets glory has passed away at age 68. The former NBA forward and guard was a stalwart on the court, his legacy stamped into Rockets' history. Reid, whose life ended after a valiant battle with cancer, was not only recognized for his athletic prowess but also for his conviction to step away from the game in its prime for his faith.
Reid, born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1955, made his mark in the NBA after being picked up by the Rockets in the second round of the 1977 draft, following four standout years at St. Mary's University. Known for his defensive skills and flexibility on the floor, Reid struck an imposing figure at 6-foot-8, dashing the hopes of his opponents while igniting the Rockets through numerous playoff runs. Despite his impressive run, in 1982 Reid stunned fans by hanging up his jersey to focus on his Pentecostal faith, retreating from the limelight to serve his church, Fox 26 Houston reported.
A key figure in Houston's basketball narrative, Reid was thrust into the spotlight during the 1980-81 NBA Finals and was a fundamental piece in the Rockets' unexpected charge to the Finals, as per CBS Sports. His role in leading the Rockets to their first two finals appearances laid the groundwork for the franchise's later success in the 1990s.
"It is with great sorrow that my family and I received the news of the passing of Rockets legend, Robert Reid. I have had the privilege of knowing Robert for over 40 years, and his presence always brought joy and positivity to any room he entered. I will never forget watching the Rockets teams he was a part of in the 80s compete in the Finals and the love he had for the game. My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Diana, and all those who held him dear. Robert's absence will be deeply felt, and he will be fondly remembered." Fertitta's statement.
After a hiatus, Reid couldn't stay away from basketball for long, returning to the Rockets and concluding his NBA journey with stints at the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Philadelphia 76ers. Reid's top-10 standing in numerous Rockets records is a testament to his skill, dedication, and heart, both on and off the court.
