The Houston-area girls made a splash that was anything but, with performances at the UIL State Girls Swimming and Diving Championship finals stacking up to create a wave of excitement that’s surging far beyond the pool deck. Ella Smoker, a senior from Cy-Fair, blasted past last year's gold medalist’s time in the 200 IM, priming herself for the possibility of topping the podium this year. The Houston Chronicle caught the excitement, listing Smoker and nine other Houston-area swimmers as athletes to watch.
Meanwhile, the University of Houston's natatorium hosted the Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships where collegiate athletes also competed for top honors. On the first day, San Diego State grabbed the spotlight with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. UNLV’s Vika Yanovskat took home the gold in the 1-meter springboard; she set a program record, hitting high marks that brought the Rebels a new glory point.
As the weekend churned on, eyes were also set on the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas in Austin, where high school dynamos duked it out in the water. Kayla Fu, a senior from Clements, was aiming for a breakout with the top qualifying times in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly - Looking to add to her already impressive medal haul, according to the Houston Chronicle. Over in Mountain West, the team rankings jostled with San Diego State, Wyoming, and Nevada swimming their way to the top three, setting up a tidal wave of competition for the remaining events.
