A Houston woman has recently been sentenced to a decade behind bars for roles in a cocaine trafficking operation. Brenda Banessa Leal, 33, faced charges of possession with intent to distribute over five kilograms of the drug, a federal offense. A bench trial, beginning on February 27 and concluding on March 1 of the previous year, ended with a conviction handed down by U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera on March 7, 2023, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Testimonies revealed that Leal had been deeply involved with a drug cartel based in Cadereyta, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, since at least 2018. Authorities say Leal helped to sneakily transport narcotics across the U.S.-Mexico border, money laundering, and even arms trafficking. According to evidence, her testimony was dismissed as non-credible, and the judge ordered her to serve a 120-month sentence, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Court documents show damning evidence such as text and WhatsApp conversations, as well as video recordings, which demostratably tied Leal to the drug organization.
In a separate matter, the Houston Texans ownership family is embroiled in a legal tussle, with their own team's affairs hanging in the balance. According to a Chron.com interview, Janice McNair's attorney Don Jackson expressed relief at the court's decision to rule against an independent medical examination of Janice McNair, paving the way to potentially dismiss the case.
Janice, who suffered a stroke in early 2022, along with her son Cal McNair, the Texans' chairman and CEO, have been desperately trying to keep details of the lawsuit out of the public eye, suggesting the leak could negatively affect the Texans' operations and relationships. Judge Jerry W. Simoneaux, Jr. concluded that the McNairs would "suffer immediate and irreparable harm" should their personal details become public, issuing a temporary sealing of the documents. The McNair family affair showcases not just a private struggle, but the rippling effects such disputes can to potentially have on a multi-million dollar sports franchise and its ancillary relationships.
