San Marcos residents are to once again enjoy the pleasure of perusing bookshelves in their town with the opening of Green Heron Bookshop, a new indie bookstore that's just flung open its doors on W. Hopkins Street.

The shop's owner, Wade Vetiver, who already runs a neighboring apothecary called Solidago, decided to meet a community need head-on. “People were really upset when Half Price [Books] closed,” Vetiver said,  a book void in San Marcos following Half Price Books' closure nearly two years ago. Vetiver was inspired by a nagging question, "What's the best book you've ever read?" leading him to collect responses via a community survey that has since shaped his store's inventory, as per Community Impact.

The Green Heron Bookshop, which officially started business on February 9, isn't just any ordinary bookstore.  the shop boasts an array of novels across genres including poetry, philosophy, and dystopian fiction, with a majority of the titles reflecting local readers' favorites, according to My San Antonio.

The sense of community doesn't end with event hosting or local art; it's palpably embedded in the very walls of the store, as revealed by Vetiver's commitment to encompass community tastes. “Over 200 books in the shop are around that [survey], ... and I keep getting new responses every day and I’m ordering those,” Vetiver explained to Community Impact.
