Irvine's voting landscape may soon be reshaped with a special ballot measure set to potentially increase the number of City Council members from five to seven and usher in a new age of by-district elections. On March 5, as part of the City’s Special Municipal Election, locals will hit the polls during the 2024 Presidential Primary Election to cast their vote on the crucial Measure D.
The crux of Measure D is to "increase the membership of the City Council from five to seven," confirmed by a statement on the City of Irvine's website. Moreover, it seeks to "transition from at-large elections to by-district elections for the six Council members, with the district boundaries as described in City Council Resolution No. 23-88." A simple majority – more than 50% of the vote – would permanently alter the electoral map beginning with November's 2024 election cycle, though the Mayor's position would remain at-large.
Voters will not only be deciding on the future representative framework of the city but will also be navigating a myriad of avenues to make sure their voices are heard. Every resident of voting age has been provided a Vote-by-Mail ballot to ensure maximum participation. There are three main methods to return these ballots, outlined by city officials to accommodate every type of voter.
Voters can bring their filled-out ballots to any Orange County Vote Center, where they can also "register to vote, request a replacement ballot, get help in multiple languages, and vote with an accessible voting machine," as quoted on the City of Irvine's official election page. Irvine's offering includes 15 convenient Vote Centers, three of which will kick open their doors on February 24, ready to assist those eager to get ahead of the crowd.
Should convenience beckon, 10 dedicated Drop Box locations across Irvine stand ready to receive ballots now through Election Day. Or, for those who prefer the traditional route, mailing a ballot is as simple as dropping it off at any U.S. mailbox – no postage necessary.
All details on the upcoming election, including specifics on Vote Center and Drop Box locations, as well as their operational hours, can be found at the city's election website or by calling the Irvine Election Hotline. With the future of Irvine's political structure on the horizon, city officials have taken great care to ensure the voting process is as smooth and accessible as possible for every resident set to cast a ballot in this momentous decision.
