Garland's own Kim Nurmi has been honored with the Distinguished Leader Award by the Garland Chamber of Commerce, a nod to her exceptional work within the community. Nurmi, who manages the Heritage Crossing, was celebrated at the Chamber's 92nd Annual Meeting held last January.
This community maven has left its mark on Garland through a flurry of initiatives aimed at enriching the local culture and history. She was pivotal in curating rotating history exhibits at the Garland Central Library and was also behind the introduction of traveling World War II and space industry exhibits to the area. During the pandemic's peak, which imposed isolation, Nurmi crafted an outdoor self-guided cemetery tour, offering residents a safe way to explore and learn amidst the public health crisis.
The Distinguished Leader Award is given to standout Leadership Garland graduates for their unwavering commitment to community service. Sometimes you come across individuals who are not at the forefront of their departments or organizations, yet in their roles, are out guiding and impacting groups of people to work together to accomplish what they could not do working individually,
said Elisa Morales, a member of the Leadership Garland Steering Committee, according to the City of Garland.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Nurmi is quite an active member of several boards and associations. She serves on the Garland Summer Musicals Board, the Garland Women’s Study Club, and the Downtown Garland Business Association. Her decade-long involvement with Leadership Garland includes three years as the chair of the Alumni Committee.
Nurmi's recognition is a testament to the power of behind-the-scenes leadership and the silent threads that weave together the fabric of a community. She exemplifies the type of leadership that values collaboration and innovation, an approach that resonates with her peers and the broader Garland residents.
