In an effort to make the leisurely sport of golf more inclusive, LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn has swung into action with a new $50,000 initiative. The program, launched in partnership with the Latina Golfers Association (LGA), aims to bring swing clinics and golfing opportunities to Southeast Los Angeles, with a particular focus on Latinas, seniors, and the youth.

According to a statement from Hahn, the initiative is set to challenge the status quo, stating, "Women and girls still face barriers in everything from sports to business to government, and for Latinas those hurdles are even higher." Hahn's ambition is to dismantle the barriers that have kept underrepresented groups from enjoying and benefiting from the sport of golf.

Dozens came out to attend the kickoff clinic hosted at the Los Amigos Golf Course, among them local middle schoolers excited for their first shot at the game, seniors looking to improve their swing, and several area politicians showing their support for the program. Pico Rivera's Councilmember Dr. Monica Sanchez, Paramount's Brenda Olmos, and Bell Gardens' Gabriela Gomez were in attendance, as well as Norwalk's mayor, Margarita Rios.

The LGA, an organization dedicated to empowering women through golf since 2008, expressed gratitude for the funds, which would be channeled into five specific programs targeting different demographics. Founder Azucena Maldonado told the community, "Supervisor Hahn’s Tee It Up Golf Initiative for Southeast Los Angeles is going to have a huge impact in the lives of residents of all ages." The LGA's mission encompasses more than teaching the sport – it's about opening doors to business and networking opportunities traditionally accessed via the golf course.

This initiative plays a critical role in not just teaching the game of golf but also in providing a platform for personal and professional growth. Hahn's investment in recreational equity is a stroke of leadership aimed at ensuring everyone gets a fair shot on the green.
