A man wielding a machete was shot and killed by Lancaster Sheriff's deputies yesterday morning after a tense encounter escalated quickly outside a grocery store. The incident took place around 9:28 a.m. on the 43500 block of 20th Street W, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Authorities received a disturbance call prompting deputies to arrive at the scene where they found the suspect, described as a White male between 35 and 40 years of age, with two machetes in his backpack. Efforts to de-escalate the situation fell short as the man reportedly agitated, took out the machetes and charged into the grocery store. Deputies attempted to peacefully resolve the encounter but were forced to shoot after less lethal options failed to stop and disarm the suspect.
The suspect was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Sheriff's Information Bureau noted that the suspect had allegedly stabbed an employee at a local gas station earlier that day; the victim of that incident was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators on site recovered the two machetes and emphasized that no other individuals were harmed during the deputy-involved shooting. "There are no outstanding suspects," the Department added in their report, as per the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
As part of the ensuing judicial review, the Critical Incident Review Panel and the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee will closely examine every aspect of the shooting. Hoodline reports that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also partake in deciding on the shooting's legality and consider any potential criminal charges against the deputies involved.
An appeal has been made to the public for information regarding the incident, with details being pivotal to fleshing out the narrative of the encounter.
