Injured when a part of the roof caved in, one firefighter, a structure further endangered the lives of those battling the blaze. Following a "mayday" distress call — a signal denoting imminent danger — a team swiftly rescued the trapped firefighters. The injured firefighter, sustaining a shoulder injury, is expected to make a full recovery, as noted in the report by abc12.
The battle against the fire was hampered by difficulty in reaching the flames, with the fire located in the attic and a concealed space above the ceiling, constructed with a sheet metal ceiling and several layers of roofing materials. "Officials said of the MAYDAY call, "It is a critical signal indicating a life-threatening situation, prompting swift and coordinated actions to ensure the safety and rescue of the individual in distress," according to officials quoted by WWJ Newsradio.
When the original crew faced trouble, reinforcements were summoned with multiple alarms. Aided by quick utility disconnections from DTE and Consumers Energy, the efforts transitioned to external operations using elevated master streams and heavy machinery.
