Two Lapeer firefighters found themselves in a dire situation over the weekend when a storage facility on Imlay City Road became an inferno with the roof collapsing atop them. According to WWJ Newsradio, the first responders arrived at the scene around 6 a.m. Saturday, immediately confronting a challenging fire at the facility owned by Midstate Well Drilling and used for storage by MKX/Berry Green Management.
Injured when a part of the roof caved in, one firefighter, a structure further endangered the lives of those battling the blaze. Following a "mayday" distress call — a signal denoting imminent danger — a team swiftly rescued the trapped firefighters. The injured firefighter, sustaining a shoulder injury, is expected to make a full recovery, as noted in the report by abc12.
The battle against the fire was hampered by difficulty in reaching the flames, with the fire located in the attic and a concealed space above the ceiling, constructed with a sheet metal ceiling and several layers of roofing materials. "Officials said of the MAYDAY call, "It is a critical signal indicating a life-threatening situation, prompting swift and coordinated actions to ensure the safety and rescue of the individual in distress," according to officials quoted by WWJ Newsradio.
When the original crew faced trouble, reinforcements were summoned with multiple alarms. Aided by quick utility disconnections from DTE and Consumers Energy, the efforts transitioned to external operations using elevated master streams and heavy machinery. Standing by while the main contingent engaged the flames, the Davison-Richfield Fire Department was requested to cover any additional emergencies, so reported The County Press.
The incident not only required the dedication and bravery of the firefighters but also drew support from the community with local businesses like Walmart and McDonald's providing refreshments to those on the frontline. The fire's cause remains unknown and under investigation by authorities, and while the extent of the damage has not been disclosed, the storied walls of the facility, now silenced by the ruin, stand as a testament to the morning's turmoil.
