Los Angeles is set to become a hub for high-level discussions as Mayor Karen Bass rolls out the welcome mat for the country's leading African American mayors. According to the city's official announcement, the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) is descending on the City of Angels to tackle a range of urgent urban issues, from affordable housing shortages to the persistent challenge of homelessness, not to mention sustainable energy and public safety enhancements.
The confab's itinerary includes a close-up look at local housing efforts at the Hilda L. Solis Care First Village in Chinatown and a strategy exchange over in Skid Row, and while they're all about the business of bettering their cities, Mayor Bass couldn't hide her excitement in a statement obtained by her very own City of LA press team, "I am thrilled to welcome members of the African American Mayors Association to Los Angeles this weekend," and she's not alone in her enthusiasm, because AAMA President Shawyn Patterson-Howard echoed the sentiment, highlighting the value of these cross-city collaborations for fast-tracking progress and tangible change.
The guest list for this high-profile meetup reads like a who's who of civic leadership, with the likes of Mayor Jaylen Smith of Earle, Arkansas, Savannah's own Mayor Van Johnson, and Mayor Vi Lyles from Charlotte, North Carolina, joining their Los Angeles host. They will be rubbing shoulders with a roster of peers including Mayor Errick Simmons of Greenville, Mississippi, and Seattle's Mayor Bruce Harrell, according to details on mayor.lacity.gov.
Mount Vernon's Mayor Patterson-Howard highlighted the pressing nature of the event and the solidarity it represents, "Together, we're working to pool our strength, share our strategies, and take bold steps learned through leadership." The promise is real solutions, real progress, right now," she reportedly said – words that set the tone for a weekend that could very well shape the urban landscapes across America into more prosperous and equitable spaces for all their inhabitants.
