Murderer Yolanda Saldivar Behind Bars, Tells All in New Selena Quintanilla Docuseries

Yolanda Saldivar, the convicted murderer of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla, is set to share her side of the story from behind bars in a new documentary airing on Oxygen True Crime. The docuseries, titled "Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them," will feature Saldivar's prison interviews and aims to shed light on the complexities of her relationship with the late singer. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, Saldivar is slated for potential parole next year, nearly 30 years after the highly publicized murder in 1995.

The series promises to provide an in-depth look at Selena and Saldivar's connection, with Saldivar speaking on her working relationship and friendship with the Tejano superstar. In a bold attempt to possibly reshape public perception, "Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them" will also present testimonies from Saldivar's family, as well as unpublished documents and recordings, as per the Houston Chronicle. Saldivar, who was the president of Selena's fan club and later managed her clothing boutiques, is said to have been embezzling money from the singer's establishments before the crime occurred.

The highly anticipated documentary is scheduled to premiere on Feb. 17 with consecutive episodes and conclude on Feb. 18. Besides Saldivar's accounts, the series is set to feature input from the hostage negotiator from the crime scene, Corpus Christi Police Department detectives, and the prosecutors involved in the case. Adding to the depth, the documentary will also include interviews with members of Saldivar’s family, according to information from People.

Saldivar's conviction in October 1995 followed a trial where prosecutors named the act as a "senseless and cowardly act of violence," while Saldivar’s defense argued the shooting was accidental, claiming, "While Selena was a victim of a tragic circumstance, she was not a victim of murder," defense attorney Fred Hagans told the jury. In her four interviews for the docuseries at Patrick L. O’Daniel Unit in Gatesville, Texas, Saldivar is expected to openly challenge the widely accepted motive behind the murder. "Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them" will also be available to stream on Peacock the day after it airs on the network, ensuring wider access to what is speculated to be a controversial retelling of the events leading up to the tragic death of a music icon.
