A fifth suspect has been entangled in the intricate plot to assassinate an Oak Park jeweler and his wife, a scheme allegedly orchestrated to gain control over the couple's considerable fortune. Phillip Sumpter, 59, of Ohio, was slammed with a charge of conspiracy to commit murder, related to the 2022 killing of jeweler Dan Hutchinson. Details of Sumpter's involvement in the crime have yet to be illuminated.
Sumpter, whose arraignment occurred last November, is set to have an examination on March 14, FOX 2 Detroit reported. This adds another layer to the already convoluted case in which noted metro Detroit attorney Marco Bisbikis and his accomplice, Angelo Raptoplous, were accused of hiring a hitman to eliminate the Hutchinsons and hijack their millions in trust accounts.
According to The Detroit News, the prosecutors have painted a grim picture of betrayal, alleging that Bisbikis and Raptoplous contracted Bisbikis' friend and employee, Darnell Larry, to orchestrate the murder of Dan and his wife, Marisa Hutchinson. Darnell's cousin, Roy Larry, is claimed to have carried out the hit, fatally shooting Hutchinson outside his jewelry store in June 2022.
In a shocking courtroom revelation, Darnell Larry admitted, "Mr. Bisbikis and Angelo ordered me to kill the Hutchinsons," adding, "These people, they was a game to him. I had no problem with them." Larry's testimony came as part of an arrangement with the prosecution, securing him a plea deal that would result in a minimum six-year prison sentence for solicitation to commit murder, as detailed by bnnbreaking.
The trials for Bisbikis and triggerman Roy Larry are due to kick off on May 13, while Raptoplous will be facing the justice system on February 20.
