The ground shook near Poth, Texas late Tuesday night, with a 2.2-magnitude tremor jolting residents about 50 miles southeast of San Antonio. This quake, recorded at approximately 8:45 p.m., follows a stronger 4.7-magnitude quake that was felt in the region last Saturday, according to Fox San Antonio.
Reports came through of people as far north as Round Rock feeling the shaking, a startling testament to the reach of these tremors. The 4.7 event that previously rattled the area around Falls City, with a humble population of roughly 500, has been part of a series of seismic activities making their presence known over the past month. Experts are pointing fingers at the oil and gas drilling and extraction operations as the culprits behind the increasing number of quakes in Texas, as outlined in aforementioned Fox San Antonio report.
On Feb. 17, just moments before the more significant 4.7 quake, a 4.4 magnitude jolt was also recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the rising frequency of earth movements, with around 30 recorded in the last three weeks, the latest quake did not result in any major damage or injuries.
