Caltrans has alerted us to some daytime work happening this Saturday, Feb. 3, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the iconic Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. Paint crews will be laying down new stripes and setting up concrete barriers known as K-rails, an effort that will pinch off a lane on Westbound Interstate-580 just before and after the toll plaza, so plan your commute accordingly.
According to Caltrans District 4, the roadwork aims to make way for wide loads while maintaining the flow of traffic, especially from the Stenmark Drive on-ramp. Amidst the asphalt ballet, toll booths 5 and 6 will remain out of commission, but booth No. 7 is making a comeback—clearing the path for the behemoths of the road and their cargo.
Caltrans is scheduled to perform striping and k-rail work, which will require a lane closure just prior to and after the toll plaza on the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge on Westbound Interstate-580 (I-580) Saturday, Feb. 3 from 6 a.m. until about 5 p.m. @CCCounty @maringov pic.twitter.com/MmlyZSLYOb

Fortunately for those who power their commute with sneakers or bike pedals, the bike and pedestrian path won't be caught up in this weekend's construction. It should be clear for a stroll or a pedal-pushing journey across the bay.
There's more good news on the horizon following closures sparked by a big-rig crash last October. Caltrans, hitching its wagon to the Bay Area Toll Authority, plans to resurrect two more toll booths later in the year.
