A tragic encounter on the streets of San Antonio has ended in gunfire and death, as recently released body cam footage from SAPD reveals the details of a fatal traffic stop. In the early hours of Jan. 18, officers conducted what was supposed to be a routine stop. The situation escalated quickly when the driver, later identified as Jervon Harper, 42, became embroiled in a physical confrontation with police.
According to the footage released, the officers requested Harper to step out of his vehicle before a struggle ensued. The body cam video shows Harper pulling out a firearm during the altercation, leading to a desperate scuffle. In the ensuing chaos, an officer, identified as Edgardo Valladares, fired his weapon, critically injuring Harper. As per a report by Fox San Antonio, both officers at scene attempted to render aid to Harper until Emergency Services arrived.
Transported to a local hospital, Harper later died from his injuries. Officer Valladares, a three-year member of SAPD, was subsequently placed on administrative duty. The department states that this is standard protocol as an inquiry into the shooting is conducted.
The San Antonio Police Department has not provided further comment on the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, Officer Valladares awaits the outcome of an investigation that will scrutinize his actions during those fateful early morning hours on E. Southcross Boulevard.
