In the early hours of Friday, February 2, San Bernardino County's H.O.P.E. Team took to the streets of Adelanto in a concerted effort termed "Operation Shelter Me", designed to assist the homeless contingent of the city. Between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., outreach operatives engaged with individuals facing the stark realities of homelessness, connecting them with critical services in the hope of constructing a stable foundation for their futures.

The team, a division of the Community Service & Reentry Division, identified 26 persons in dire need of shelter and support. A mother and daughter, recent additions to the ranks of the city's unhoused, were escorted to bridge housing and are in the process of accessing more permanent solutions. A total of 15 others received referrals to assistance programs, with an additional six getting linked with follow-up professional services, despite the limits in service capacity, the team is persistent in their efforts.

"Operation Shelter Me" is a direct response to the resources allocated under Senate Bill 170, which infuses funding into ongoing outreaches like this one. With this support, the H.O.P.E. Team intends to continue their mission across the county in the forthcoming years.

Also central to the initiative is Laura's Law, activated in San Bernardino last June, which significantly influences the team's ability to provide court-ordered treatment for those with mental health challenges. During the operation, deputies encountered a candidate apt for this outpatient treatment, providing a glimmer of hope for those trapped in a cycle of institutionalization and adversity.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff, Shannon D. Dicus, encourages anyone with knowledge of homeless individuals in need of aid to reach out to the H.O.P.E. Team at 909-387-0623 or via email at [email protected]. More details about "Operation Shelter Me" and the team's outreach programs can be found on the Sheriff's official page.
