Officials say the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Armory Dr, with the vehicle finally pulling over in front of the new SRJC Student Housing complex.
Law enforcement's routine stop led to an unexpected find when one officer, upon searching the vehicle, spotted a loaded pistol on the passenger floorboard. The situation escalated quickly when the passenger bolted, initiating a foot chase. Despite the slippery conditions, the police managed to apprehend the suspect after a brief pursuit, according to a statement from the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The passenger, identified as Ivan Escamilla-Castillo, didn't manage to evade capture for long and now faces multiple firearms-related charges. Among them, Escamilla-Castillo is accused of carrying a loaded firearm that wasn't registered with the Department of Justice, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and possessing a loaded firearm on school property.
Sgt. M. Pietrelli, a representative for the police department, confirmed details of the arrest, stating the charges include "25850(c)(6) PC: Carry loaded firearm not registered with DOJ," "25850(a) PC: Carry loaded firearm in public," and "626.9(h) PC: Carry loaded firearm on a school campus." The suspect was also charged with attempting to delay or resist officers during their investigation. After the takedown, Escamilla-Castillo was booked into the local jail, awaiting the next steps in his legal battle.
