Seattle residents are bracing for potential flooding as steady rains continue to saturate western Washington. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle has maintained a Flood Watch in effect through Thursday afternoon for multiple counties, including Grays Harbor, King, Lewis, Pierce, and Thurston.
"Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible," the NWS warned. Areas at risk are cautioned to remain vigilant as the frontal system is expected to rapidly increase river levels, potentially leading to overflows. According to the NWS, this lingering weather condition is partly due to a combination of moderate to heavy rainfall and to a lesser extent, snowmelt from warming temperatures.
For Seattle, the forecast predicts a mix of rain and snow, with low snow accumulation. Over the next few days, the city will see temperatures hovering in the 40s, with continuous precipitation chances ranging from rain and snow likely to mere chances of either. The unpredictability of the weather emphasizes the need for preparedness among locals.
Residents have been urged to closely monitor the forecasts and be ready to quickly take action should flooding develop. “Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations,” the NWS advisory states. The combination of a rising snow level and moderate to heavy rain may prove to be too much for some already swollen waterways. The Flood Watch notification includes concerns for "minor flooding of some streams and rivers" and points out that uncertainty remains about which rivers will flood, contingent upon snow level changes, precipitation types, and amounts, and snowmelt.
Those living in the affected areas are advised to stay informed of any updates and warnings issued by local authorities and the National Weather Service. As the city faces what could be a prolonged period of inclement weather, the importance of individual and community preparedness is underscored. The NWS continues to track the developing situation and will issue Flood Warnings if necessary.
