Wielding a hockey stick as a weapon, a Michigan man has been sentenced to more than three years behind bars for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. Michael Joseph Foy, 32, from Wixom, received a 40-month prison term after being convicted of assaulting officers and obstructing an official proceeding, CBS News Detroit reported.
On Jan. 6, 2021, dressed in camouflage and carrying a Trump 2020 flag affixed to a hockey stick, Foy joined the crowd that toppled barricades and charged law enforcement at the Capitol. In the chaos, easily seen in body camera footage, Foy delivered at least 11 strikes to officers over 16 seconds, as if chopping wood.
Foy's assault on the officers included hitting an already downed officer and another being knocked backward. "Foy's victims included an injured officer who had already fallen to the ground and an officer whom Foy struck and knocked backward," stated the Department of Justice. He then entered the Capitol through a broken window, rallying others to follow him inside. Foy was apprehended on January 21, merely a couple of weeks after the attack.
Since the incident at the Capitol, over 1,313 individuals have faced charges related to the breach, with more than 469 of those involving assaults or impediments to law enforcement, a felony. The extensive investigation into the Capitol breach is ongoing, with a clear message being sent that actions carry consequences.
