The San Antonio Spurs' struggles continued as they were handed another defeat by the Cleveland Cavaliers with a scoreline of 117-101, rounding off a tough homestand. Despite rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama notching 19 points and 14 rebounds, it was not enough to turn the tide for the Spurs, who are now 10-40 for the season, scraping the bottom of the Western Conference standings. ESPN reported Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley's dominant performances, with Mitchell scoring 31 points and Mobley contributing 28 points alongside 10 rebounds.
Mitchell did not mince words about the competitive fire on display, stating, "For Ev and J, but especially Ev being around the same age and kind of coming up together. You want to send a message for sure." The Spurs, who appeared fatigued, playing their fourth game in six nights, only briefly led early in the first quarter before Cleveland took control. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich conceded, "We didn’t have as much juice as last night, obviously,” according to a KENS interview, acknowledging the team's grueling schedule.
The game was not without controversy, as tensions boiled over leading to the ejection of Mitchell and the Spurs' Zach Collins following a scuffle, it was Collins's elbow and Mitchell's subsequent shove in the final minute of the game that sparked the altercation. Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff defended his player, "Donovan did what Donovan does, he stood up for himself," in an interview provided by ESPN. Mitchell himself admitted that he anticipated the ejection but maintained that he had to push back after what he felt was a "dirty" play by Collins.
With the homestand behind them, the Spurs now look ahead to a nine-game road trip, starting with the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Popovich is viewing the upcoming journey as an opportunity, not just for wins, but for team building, noting in a statement obtained by KENS that off-court activities like team bowling sessions are valuable, "It's nice. It's cool. I guess it's also a real test for the team." As the road trip looms, the Spurs will need to muster all of their resilience and unity to turn their dismal season around.
