A female suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church following an altercation where she opened fire on the premises, officials confirmed. The woman, estimated to be between 30 to 35 years old, arrived at the Houston megachurch sporting a trenchcoat and was armed with a rifle. Her actions prompted a swift response from two off-duty officers present at the scene. According to CBS News, the incident occurred just as the establishment was gearing up for its Spanish language service, and resulted in two victims: a 57-year-old man who sustained a leg injury and a young child in critical condition at Texas Children's Hospital.
Triggering a state of chaos the armed woman accompanied by a young child, speculated to be around 4 or 5 years old, began firing shots on the west side of the church parking lot, and when confronted by the officers, she allegedly claimed to possess a bomb – a threat that was later invalidated after the authorities found no bomb upon investigating her vehicle and belongings. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner, as reported by CBS News, praised the off-duty officers for their timely intervention, stating, "It could have been a lot worse," acknowledging that "They stepped up and did their job."
The identity of the female shooter has yet to be disclosed, and details concerning the relationship between her and the wounded child remain unclear, however, Chief Finner assured that the investigation will persevere until all facets of the situation are thoroughly understood. In the wake of the incident, Joel Osteen expressed his devastation, "We don't understand why these things happen," Osteen said, "We're going to pray for the 5-year-old little boy, the lady who is deceased and the other gentleman," his sentiments echoed by The Independent.
Garnering state-level attention, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement vocalizing his support for the victims and condemned the violation of the sanctity of worship, "Our hearts are with those impacted by today's tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston," while promising full resources into delivering justice, the governor's words lent credence by The Independent. Furthermore, in response to the incident, local law enforcement has decided to step up patrol in the vicinity of religious institutions, tending to public safety concerns born out of the day's unfortunate proceedings.
