After a tense standoff in southwest Houston, Joseph Catarineau, a man with multiple felony warrants, was finally taken into custody. The scene was prompted by the Violent Persons Task Force who were searching for Catarineau, dispatching Harris County sheriff’s office SWAT after the suspect barricaded himself inside a residential property on the 5800 block of Carew, close to Beechnut and Hillcroft.
As reported by KPRC 2, during the operation, loudspeakers blared with messages from the sheriff’s office, aiming to coax the suspect into surrender. "This is the Harris County Sheriff, Joseph Catarineau, we have a warrant for your arrest," was the announcement reverberating through the neighborhood, intended for Catarineau but heard by residents barricaded for their safety.
Catarineau's legal troubles were highlighted by court records showing five warrants issued on Feb. 12. Notably, he faced charges of fraud and had a history of violence in the court itself, attacking a bailiff, judge, and prosecutor back on Dec. 14. After bonding out in May 2022, Catarineau failed to appear for his scheduled court hearing on Feb. 9, which led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.
The situation led to a temporary shutting down of the area around Beechnut Street and Dunlap as law enforcement ensured public safety and worked towards a resolution. The sheriff confirmed the successful outcome via X, with a post stating: "Good work! Joseph Catarineau (11-21-63) has been taken into custody." The post, also detailed by the Harris County Sheriff's Office X account, affirmed Catarineau's arrest and the closing of multiple open felony warrants.
