According to official statements, Ramos' scheme fell apart when a canine unit sniffed out the secret cargo tucked underneath a tractor bed and squirreled away in cabinets.
During sentencing, U.S. District Judge David S. Morales pointed out that the "number of aliens and manner of transportation was concerning," signaling the seriousness of the offense. After serving his time, Ramos will be under the watchful eye of authorities with a two-year supervised release tacked on, as reported by the U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
The creaking wheels of Ramos' trafficking operation came to a halt on April 19, 2023, when Border Patrol agents at a checkpoint near Sarita spied the human stash during an inspection Ramos' lawyers tried to peddle a tale of ignorance, but the jury didn't buy it and slapped him with a guilty verdict. Evidence presented at trial included incriminating phone records and a voice message detailing the logistics of this illicit human cargo operation.
Despite the conviction, Ramos was granted a short-term reprieve, allowed to remain out on bond with the obligation to turn himself in at an undetermined federal prison location.
