With Texas' population surging past 30.5 million according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data, the number of registered voters in Texas has swelled in tandem. As we approach the March 5 primaries, a staggering tally of almost 18 million Texans are now registered to hit the polls, reports CBS Austin

The deadline for Texans to join the electorate was February 5, the day before this report. For many, like Austin resident Mark Green who told CBS Austin, it was an inaugural journey into the realm of civic participation. "I just want to get registered for now, first step," Green stated, with an eye towards becoming an informed voter by the time of casting his first ballot. Despite the large numbers, voter registration drives like the one on East Cesar Chavez in East Austin saw a mere trickle of participants, but organizations like PODER remain optimistic about future voter engagement.

Significant changes in voter registration have been noted across Texas with some suburbs seeing explosive growth. According to KXAN, Kaufman County, for example, headed the pack with a 33% uptick in the number of individuals registered to vote. Meanwhile, in contrast, the rural McMullen County saw a reduction of 11.75% in its registered voters over the last four years, which was the state's sharpest decline.

Harris County, which encompasses the sprawling metropolis of Houston, added an astounding 230,000 voters since 2000, the most in Texas. Meanwhile, populous counties like Dallas, Tarrant, and Bexar each tallied over 1 million registered voters, which could mean more voices and potentially, more change come election time. In Central Texas, home to the KXAN viewing area, an impressive 13.8% increase in registered voters has been documented from January 2020 through January 2024, indicating a robust enthusiasm for political engagement in the heart of Texas.
