In a bid to illuminate the shadowy practices of cult-like groups, Traverse City is set to host a conversation with Keely Griffin, a survivor of the Michigan-based spiritual mentoring group Twin Flames Universe (TFU), and cult expert Dr. Janja Lalich. According to Freep.com, the discussion is part of a larger book signing event, where attendees can expect to dive deep into the dangers and manipulations of such high-control groups.
The panel, set for Feb. 22 at the historic Traverse City Opera House, will be moderated by Jacob Wheeler, local journalist and publisher of the Glen Arbor Sun. Griffin's experiences with TFU included being coerced into an abusive relationship and working as an "Ascension Coach," tasks she asserts involved psychological manipulation, according to the National Writers Series announcement. "There's so much more to talk about," Griffin said, highlighting the limited scope of the Netflix docuseries that first brought TFU to public attention in November 2023.
Alongside Griffin is Dr. Lalich, author of "Take Back Your Life: Recovering from Cults and Abusive Relationships," who, according to a BNNBreaking.com article, will provide a roadmap for those looking to free themselves from the clutches of such organizations. Dr. Lalich's work elucidates the patterns and strategies of high-control groups like TFU, aiming to equip individuals with the necessary tools for recovery.
Concerns are mounting in the community, especially as TFU is scheduled to host a "Spiritual Life Summit" in Traverse City from June 13-16. The National Writers Series seeks to raise awareness ahead of this event, "Twin Flames cult members have moved from across the nation to northern Michigan," stated NWS Marketing Director Noelle Riley, she's looking forward to educating the area about the group's real intentions, as reported by Freep.com.
Tickets for the upcoming panel range from $17 for virtual attendance to $48.50 for a front-row experience, all in-person tickets come with a signed copy of Dr. Lalich's book. Students, meanwhile, can snag tickets for $10 if they don't need the book. For those interested in attending the event and learning more, details can be found on the Facebook page of the Glen Arbor Sun.
