Booze is coming to the Big House's siblings. Starting Friday, Wolverines fans can sip a cold beer whilst cheering their teams at the University of Michigan's Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena. This new alcoholic twist comes in the wake of a liquor license approval, a significant change in policy for the Ann Arbor institution.
Following an October green light from U of M's Board of Regents and the subsequent signing of a legislative permit by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the taps will finally be flowing at these iconic athletic venues. CBS Detroit reported the first event to serve alcohol will be Friday's wrestling match against Iowa, offering attendees over the legal drinking age the option of buying two drinks per transaction.
Men's and women's basketball fans can toast their teams starting Saturday and on Feb. 6, respectively, while ice hockey aficionados will have to wait until Feb. 9 to enjoy their beverages during a face-off against Michigan State. The university has ensured a responsible drinking environment by requiring all patrons to show ID, details confirmed by mgoblue.
While spirits, brews, and cheers are set to mingle in these arenas, the University's largest sports facility, Michigan Stadium, is counting out the kegs for now. U of M officials stated that the decision to bring alcohol sales to 'The Big House' would only be considered after reviewing data and experiences from its sibling venues. This information was disseminated by News Channel 3.
To complement the new offering, U of M is expanding its security measures including a Weapons Detection System, a move to heighten safety and smooth entry for event-goers. Fans are advised to get there early — gates will throw open one hour before the games and events begin. A cheers to that, but remember, only two drinks a pop.
