Warren, Michigan Charges Ahead with BorgWarner's Electric Vehicle Battery Service CenterSource: Google Street View

Auto industry giant BorgWarner is charging up Warren, Michigan, with a spark of economic growth, thanks to significant tax abatements and a hefty investment that's powering up a new EV battery service center. BorgWarner, a key player in automotive and e-mobility, headquartered in Auburn Hills, clinched a 12-year Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption Certificate from Warren's city officials. This move comes after the company's strategic expansion into the city in May 2023, according to Macomb County, Michigan.

The prize facility, which will serve as a hub for servicing BorgWarner batteries across North America, slots into the Mound Road Industrial Park snugly between Nine and 10-mile roads. The center is the result of a substantial $10.9 million investment, including a $8.6 million building cost covered by Northpoint and Borg Warner's own $2.3 million buildout cost. That investment is expected to not only enhance Warren's industrial prowess but also bring about the creation of 50 new jobs by May 2025, ramping up the local workforce.

Cooperation has been the backbone of this electrifying advancement in Warren's economic landscape. The Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development (MCPED) played a key role, joining forces with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to secure a support letter from the city. Additionally, they collaborated with Macomb/St. Clair Michigan Works! and Macomb Community College to spark interest in hiring and training incentives, further driving support for BorgWarner's project.

April 2023 marked the announcement of BorgWarner's ambitious plan to pump $20 million into Michigan's economy, which included expanding the capabilities of three existing state facilities, in Auburn Hills, Dearborn, and Hazel Park, and the development of the battery service center. Bolstering this expansion is a $1.86-million grant from the MEDC's Michigan Business Development Program. This financial injection is directed towards the expansion activities and, the amplification of BorgWarner's electrification objectives.

Businesses eyeing expansion opportunities may find a warm welcome in Macomb County. Economic development specialists are on standby to energize potential ventures and can be reached at 586-469-5285 or [email protected] for further information and assistance.
