An accident at a downtown construction site has resulted in a serious injury for one worker after a subterranean stairwell collapsed Thursday morning. The incident, reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), occurred at 226 W Olympic Blvd.
The collapse happened at approximately 11:37 AM, trapping an adult male worker beneath the rubble. Firefighters were quick to respond, managing to free the individual swiftly from the debris upon their arrival. The LAFD confirmed the worker was then transported to a nearby hospital sustaining serious injuries. It appears that luck was on the rest of the crew's side as no other injuries have been reported following the incident.
As per LAFD's spokesman Brian Humphrey, investigations into the cause of the collapse are currently underway. Inquiries have been directed towards both property management and California's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal OSHA). Safety at construction sites remains a significant concern and measures are continually being reviewed to prevent accidents such as this.
Details about the circumstances leading up to the collapse are still emerging, with LAFD and Cal OSHA working together to thoroughly review all factors involved. Whether it was structural failure or other factors that led to the collapse is yet to be determined, but officials are to ensure no stone is unturned. The officials’ quick response to the incident has been pivotal in securing the area and aiding the injured worker.
