A 20-year-old man faces serious charges after a deadly fire in Galveston, Texas, claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman. Courtney Allen Thompson was taken into custody on Friday, suspected of arson and murder in connection with the February 29 blaze, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. The fire erupted in the 700 block of 39th Street.
According to Click2Houston, Thompson, upon fighting the fire, first responders quickly got three people out of the house. Yet inside, they found Renita Hawthorne unconscious. Later at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Trauma Center, Hawthorne was pronounced dead.
Thompson was arrested in Houston, well away from the scene of the tragedy. Police have currently charged him with capital murder alongside three counts of aggravated assault. "I just wish I could bring her back," Renita's cousin, Sharonda Hawthorne, lamented to FOX 26 Houston. Galveston authorities conveyed that the bond for the capital murder charge is set at $700,000, while $1 million is set for each aggravated assault charge. The case may expand as further investigation could potentially result in additional charges.
While details are still emerging, what is known strikes a harrowing chord among all who hear of such sorrow—a family's heart abruptly cleaved by loss, a cousin mourning the void no words could fill, as conveyed by Sharonda Hawthorne's quote obtained by FOX 26 Houston. The Galveston Police Department confirmed their ongoing pursuit of possibly additional suspects in the case, reminding us that the quest for justice has demanding, oft-unfinished roads.
