
An Allegan man lost his life Sunday morning when his car veered off the road and plunged into a Monroe County lagoon, authorities confirmed. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office identified the deceased as 52-year-old Robert Fuss. Deputies responded to an accident scene around 8:20 a.m. on Lakeshore Drive, just south of Avenue I in the La Salle Township, as reported by The Detroit News.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Fuss' Subaru Outback submerged with him inside, tragically dead. Based on ClickOnDetroit, speed is thought to have been a catalyst in the fatal incident. The preliminary investigation suggests Fuss was traveling south on Lakeshore Drive and, after passing the Avenue I intersection, continued into the lagoon's deadly embrace.
The vehicle's airbags did not deploy during the crash, and it's currently unclear if Fuss was wearing his seat belt, added the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. An underwater search by the Sheriff’s Office Dive team resulted in the recovery of the vehicle. Fuss's body was subsequently taken to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for further examination.
Officials said that the investigation is ongoing and have urged anyone with information to come forward. "It is not known if alcohol was one" contributing factor, a statement obtained by 13abc highlights.
