Austin’s historic Brush Square has been bestowed the prestigious title of a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Park Society, as reported on March 4th, according to the City of Austin. This designation, announced at the society's annual conference in Galveston, highlights the park's significance in Texas.
To be considered for this honor, parks must be of a certain age, a minimum of 50 years, and possess attributes that resonate with historical, and architectural, and they must have natural importance. The distinct title solidifies Brush Square's status as an essential part of Texas's narrative and communal identity. Attesting to its importance, Brush Square, located at 409 E. 5th St., was delineated as one of four original public squares in 1839 when the city’s blueprint was drawn.
Before becoming a park in 1913, Brush Square had quite a history, serving as a public market and even a cotton yard. Notably, it houses three landmark buildings: the O. Henry Museum, the Central Fire Station #1, and the Susanna Dickinson Museum. These structures serve not only as a testament to the square's past but also its continued cultural relevance. "The recognition of Brush Square as a Lone Star Legacy Park came at the perfect time," Austin Parks and Recreation Department Director Kimberly McNeeley said according to the City of Austin's announcement. The department recently completed Phase I of the Brush Square Vision Plan and rehabilitated the O. Henry Museum.
Other parks graced with the 2024 Lone Star Legacy title include Carver Park in Cleburne, Huntsville State Park, Martin Luther King Park in San Antonio, Menard Park in Galveston, and White Rock Lake in Dallas. Austin itself is no stranger to such recognition, with parks like Parque Zaragoza, Pease District, Zilker Metropolitan, Rosewood Neighborhood, Eastwoods Neighborhood, Givens District, and Pan Am Neighborhood Park also on the list of honorees. Brush Square's designation is a nod to its storied past and, its vibrant present as it continues to serve as a verdant enclave amidst the bustling cityscape.
