The Golden State's Senate race has shaped up into an epic showdown between a GOP baseball legend and a seasoned Democrat congressman. Steve Garvey, the ex-Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres star will step up to the political plate against veteran Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff in November after both emerged as the top contenders in California's primary race. According to the Detroit Free Press, Garvey impressed with a preliminary lead, hauling in 34.6% of the vote to Schiff's 30.8%, leaving Democrats Katie Porter and Barbara Lee in the dust.
Garvey's run for the seat has been anything but traditional. Sporting minimal campaign efforts, the former MVP and World Series champ appeared to rely on his diamond-studded recognition rather than the political playbook. Despite this, as The Detroit News reports, the Republican is hardly a shoo-in, facing an uphill battle in a state that's batted blue since 1992. Yet Garvey, refusing to throw in the towel, told supporters, "It ain't over 'til it's over."
Schiff, on the other hand, has to deal with the fallout from a victory rally gone awry, as protestors chanted "Free Palestine" amid the Gaza-Israel tensions. Despite these incidents, The Wall Street Journal highlighted how Schiff's strategy of painting Garvey with a Republican brush seemed to pay dividends, raising Garvey's profile with GOP voters.
Both candidates are playing for the opportunity to fill the remainder of Feinstein's term, following her passing in September 2023. Californians are witnessing a changing guard, something Garvey and Schiff are acutely aware of. Garvey, positioning himself as an outsider, could follow in the cleats of other sports figures turned political players, like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bill Bradley. Schiff, with his track record in the House and notable performance during Trump’s first impeachment, launches as the favorite. Yet the race's intensity echoes the competitive spirit of the ball field—something Garvey knows all too well.
