Travelers and residents in Canton Township should brace themselves for significant traffic changes on Michigan Avenue. Starting April 15, and continuing through July, a pedestrian improvement project will result in lane closures that will likely test the patience of daily commuters and passersby.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the construction will affect the right-lane and shoulder closures on both eastbound and westbound Michigan Avenue between Haggerty and Hannan roads at the I-275 interchange. During the project, the right turn lane on westbound Michigan Avenue at Haggerty Road will be closed, with traffic detoured to northbound Lilly Road and then eastbound Palmer Road to Haggerty Road, catching drivers who take the route regularly off guard.
The CBS News Detroit report included comments from MDOT, indicating that the project aims to enhance pedestrian safety by improving signals, crosswalks, ramps, and sidewalks. This work is expected to provide long-term benefits but will cause short-term disruption to usual traffic patterns in the area.
There will be times when to pull wires across the road, and crews will occasionally stop traffic between Haggerty and Hannan roads, as confirmed by both MDOT and CBS News Detroit announcements. A temporary pedestrian crosswalk at Haggerty Road will also be established to accommodate foot traffic while the intersection is under construction.
The disruptions and efforts to improve pedestrian access highlight the community's commitment to safety and accessible transportation for all citizens. While the closure is expected to last through July, drivers and residents alike are advised to plan for delays and allow for extra travel time.
