Dallas high schoolers can ditch the price tag shock of prom season thanks to Dallas Public Library's annual giveaway of formal wear, kicking off March 9. In a generous bid, students will have access to thousands of free gowns, suits, shoes, and accessories from the Fairy Tale Closet located at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library.

Students have four chances to score their prom attire, with the closet's doors swinging open this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., though appointments for this session are already full. Additional dates include March 13 from 1 to 4 p.m., March 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Though reservations are recommended, walk-ins may try their luck on a first-come, first-served basis, acknowledged the Dallas Public Library in a statement, per the City of Dallas.

The initiative includes attire not just for girls but also for guys and non-binary students. To assist in the hunt for the perfect outfit, dozens of volunteers will step into the role of Fairy Godparents. The service organization Project Beauty has teamed up with the library this year, contributing hundreds of dresses and also offering expert advice on hair and makeup during the Saturday events.

Since its inception in 2014, the Fairy Tale Closet has outfitted many prom-goers, restocking yearly through community generosity. And it's not just dressing on the docket; the Friends of the Dallas Public Library also chip in with other essentials to ensure each event is a hit.
