DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich – The City of Dearborn Heights has made a significant move to bolster its ethical oversight by appointing Paul Vanderplow as the Internal Affairs Investigator for the police department. Vanderplow, who currently holds the position of Director of Support Services, is set to maintain his current role in addition to his new appointment, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Vanderplow's extensive experience spans nearly three decades in law enforcement – a career which includes roles such as the Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and service with the Detroit District of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division. Mayor Bill Bazzi has expressed his frustration over reports of questionable conduct within the city's elected and staff positions, highlighting a need to "legally, thoroughly, and in plain sight" investigate allegations. The intent is to transparently directly address any possible legal and organizational implications for the city, according to a statement obtained by The Arab American News.
The appointment appears timely, coming on the heels of the city council's controversial decision to cancel the salary and benefits of two police directors. This internal shakeup seems poised to pave the way for a new era of accountability and oversight for Dearborn Heights. Detailed in a press release, Mayor Bazzi conveyed his confidence in Vanderplow to “effectively” fill the investigatory role, as reported by the dearborn.org.
With a bachelor's degree in finance/accounting and an Executive Management Program completion from Northwestern University under his belt, Vanderplow is well equipped to handle the intricacies of internal investigations. Aside from his professional credentials, he carries the distinction of Eagle Scout and actively chairs the National Law Enforcement Exploring Program. His expansive career has prepared him to swiftly bridge into this role, ready to tackle the challenge of rooting out and to rigorously hold to account any individual seeking personal gain at the city's expense.
The city is urging anyone with information on waste, fraud, or abuse within Dearborn Heights to come forward. Contact can be made through their Internal Affairs hotline at 313-277-7717 or by emailing [email protected], and whistleblowers have the option to remain anonymous. This outreach initiative underscores the administration's serious approach to cleansing its ranks and reinforces the broader message of a government committed to its constituents' welfare.
