A Dearborn man, 28-year-old Haitham Sami Bazzi, has been hit with a 17-year prison sentence for the sexual exploitation of a teenager who, he also gave methamphetamine to, federal authorities announced. Bazzi previously admitted his guilt in the case and, under a plea agreement, additional charges of receiving and possessing child pornography were dismissed, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.
The condemnable actions of Bazzi began when he met the 16-year-old on an online dating application in summer 2021. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, it was then that Bazzi engaged in sex acts with the victim, supplied the minor with methamphetamine, and filmed the abuse. Bazzi's reprehensible obsession with child sexually abusive material came to light when a concerned adult, after being shown such content by Bazzi on his phone, reported him to Dearborn police.
Upon receiving the tip, authorities executed a search warrant at Bazzi's residence where they seized multiple devices. These devices, which the FBI later scrutinized, contained vast amounts of child sexual abuse imagery—among them videos of the victim Bazzi had exploited. This led to the 2022 indictment of Bazzi and his eventual guilty plea in November.
The severity of Bazzi’s crimes was underlined by federal prosecutors who cited how Bazzi's victims — including the children whose assaults he watched online — are doomed to an existence haunted by their past trauma, according to court documents obtained by the Detroit Free Press. A memorandum that Bazzi filed to seal was granted, containing sensitive information about Bazzi's mental health history and substance abuse issues, which was brought up for discussion due to its relevance to the case.
U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison, in the face of Bazzi’s sentencing, reiterated the commitment to protecting vulnerable children, stating, "We must do everything in our power to protect our children from those who seek to cause them enduring harm. By seeking just punishment, we acknowledge this victim’s trauma and hope that this sentence helps the child’s journey toward a full recovery." Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson also emphasized the role of the community in bringing Bazzi to justice, thanking the individual who reported him, and urging anyone privy to similar crimes to reach out to the FBI.
