A man is behind bars after a high-speed chase that began in Berkley and saw him evading police through multiple cities at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The pursuit occurred early Monday morning along Woodward Avenue, where Berkley police noted the driver hurtling down the road, at one point near 12 Mile Road, and blatantly running red lights, reported WXYZ.
The suspect, identified as a 32-year-old man from Detroit, was finally apprehended after he stopped at a red light in Pleasant Ridge. However, when he attempted to flee once again, police employed a maneuver to ram his car, successfully deterring the escape and placing him under arrest. According to CBS News Detroit, the individual is now facing charges including fleeing police, driving under the influence, and vehicle theft.
In a separate but similar incident over the weekend, Berkley police were in pursuit of a driver who fled after being clocked at 67 mph in a 35 mph zone. The white Alfa Romeo Giulia initially evaded capture and continued to elude officers in heavy traffic after being spotted traveling south on Woodward. The attempt to box in the suspect at Coolidge and 11 Mile was thwarted when the driver collided with another vehicle and made a narrow escape, necessitating an officer to evade injury by quickly moving out of harm's way, detailed FOX 2 Detroit. The suspect remains at large, with police urging anyone with details about the white Alfa Romeo, featuring dark tinted windows, a broken tail light, and a damaged rear fender, to contact the authorities.
While the driver in the initial chase is now facing legal repercussions, the second suspect's identity is yet undiscovered. Berkley police have stressed the seriousness of these high-speed pursuits and their potential to endanger lives, beyond the immediate hazard posed to the drivers themselves and the pursuing officers.
