A high-speed car chase in Warren led to the arrest of a Detroit man, who is now facing several felony charges after reportedly clashing with police officers during a traffic stop. Romero Austin-Folson, 27, was charged with third-degree fleeing and eluding and assaulting and resisting an officer after the incident last Saturday, as reported by The Detroit News.
Warren police state that they attempted to pull over Austin-Folson's gold Chevrolet Malibu for a license plate violation. However, the encounter escalated when Austin-Folson reportedly became uncooperative and engaged in a physical altercation with the officers. The situation worsened when he allegedly struck an officer with his vehicle before fleeing, which triggered a chase through the streets of Detroit. As per the release from FOX 2 Detroit, an officer's foot might have been run over during the event.
After the chase concluded near Eight Mile and Russell Avenue, Austin-Folson again fought with the police, which led to him being subdued by an electric stun gun. Despite authorities' search for a firearm, they suspected he discarded during the pursuit, no weapon was found. Notably, Austin-Folson's license reportedly shows multiple open suspensions and he has a history of eluding police, the Macomb Daily detailed.
The bonded amount set for Austin-Folson is $100,000 cash/surety only, and in accordance to Peter Lucido, Macomb County Prosecutor, who voiced his commendation for the Warren Police Department's dedication to pursuing those who evade the law. Both officers involved in the initial altercation did not require medical attention after the incident. Austin-Folson's next appearance in court is scheduled for March 26, where he will attend a probable cause hearing before Judge Michael Chupa.
