A Metro Detroit teacher claims she was axed from her job over her rap career. Domonique Brown, who taught U.S. history at Taylor Preparatory High School and doubles as rapper "Drippin Honey," alleged she was fired following a parent's complaint about her musical pursuits, as reported by WJBK.

The issue surfaced months after Brown, a Detroit native won teacher of the month. She contends her extracurricular activities had no bearing on her teaching, "My outside life should not be grounds for termination when it does not interfere with my ability to fulfill my responsibilities as a teacher," Brown stated in a music video posted on YouTube which features her students post-dismissal. The song, "Drippin' 101," has attracted significant attention online since the controversy unfolded.

In defense of her dual career, Brown highlights the cultural importance of her music in the city known for Motown, "Music is part of the culture," she told WWJ Newsradio 950. "We’re from Motown, this is what we do. So it’s not like it’s unheard of, it’s the culture. When you look like me, you just understand it a little bit … better."

Brown explained that despite a series meetings, she never received the complaints in writing. "The meetings was like so one-sided where they only told me what somebody didn’t like. They didn’t tell me, as if, ‘You did this wrong. You did that wrong’ ... that’s why I also [said] on my behalf, 'Well send me what am I doing wrong in writing.'” she expressed in a WXYZ interview. The support for Brown appears strong with a petition garnering over 200 signatures from students, affirming her positive impact on their lives.

As the legal proceedings loom, Taylor Prep has maintained its stance on the situation providing a statement regarding the delicate balance they strive to maintain. "While student and employee privacy rights limit the details I can share, what I can say is that we are aware of the alleged claims by a former teacher. Student well-being remains at the forefront of everything we do, and we will continue fostering a distraction-free teaching and learning environment focused on student success." Taylor Prep spokeswoman Leah Nixon said, according to WXYZ.
