McALLEN, Texas – A hefty shipment of meth worth an estimated $1 million just lost its ride, as the feds busted a trafficker ready to spread poison across Texan streets. Daren Lynn Lopez, a 51-year-old from Edinburg, has landed himself a spot behind bars for nearly two decades after admitting to his part in a major drug conspiracy, the U.S. Attorney's Office reports.
Lopez, whose criminal resume is already seasoned with three prior felonies, got slapped with a 192-month federal prison sentence by U.S. District Chief Judge Randy Crane. The hefty sentence was delivered yesterday reflecting the judge’s concern over the "additive, potent and dangerous effects meth has on the community," according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office. Post-prison, Lopez will be under the watchful eye of the law for an additional three years of supervised release.
The meth march madness began back in March 2022, when Lopez orchestrated the movement of a trailer smuggling 200 kilograms of the drug across the U.S. border from Mexico. The vehicle – with its illicit load – made it to Lopez’s Edinburg truck yard without a hitch. It was there, that Lopez played logistics maestro once more, arranging for a courier to ship the stash to Dallas. However, his symphony of sin hit a sour note when law enforcement officers intercepted the trailer, unearthing a hidden compartment within the roof holding numerous bricks of meth.
Lopez is currently in custody awaiting transfer to a federal prison, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. His arrest, though notable, is just another chapter in America's ongoing fight against drugs, highlighting efforts to stop narcotics at the country's borders. During the time between his guilty plea and sentencing, Lopez's fate has been sealed – he faces a future behind bars, far from the trafficking routes where he once operated.
