A joint emergency operation was launched off the Sonoma Coast after a fisherman suffered a severe injury, leading to an amputation on their vessel, officials said. The incident, which occurred earlier this morning, prompted response efforts from Sonoma County Fire, the United States Coast Guard, Sonoma County's Henry 1, and California Highway Patrol's (CHP) H-30 division.
Upon receiving the distress signal from the fishing boat, Sonoma County Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene swiftly, meeting the incoming vessel at the boat ramp where they discovered the casualty with a major injury according to CHP - Golden Gate Division Air Operations facebook page. Helicopter H-30 subsequently made a landing at the site to facilitate the swift transport of the injured party to Kaiser Vacaville Hospital, where the individual is currently receiving care from a specialized trauma team.
While the details regarding how the injury occurred remain sparse, the trauma inflicted was severe enough to warrant immediate evacuation and advanced medical attention.
The investigation into the accident has been assigned to the United States Coast Guard, which will seek to determine the events that culminated in the traumatic injury out at sea, confirming the extent of protocols followed and safety measures in place on the vessel were adequate and yet, why such grave injury befell that seafarer.
