In the early hours of Saturday, tragedy struck Napa's Silverado Trail, when a disabled vehicle led to a grim traffic incident, resulting in a fatality. According to authorities, at around 4:10 a.m. a vehicle became incapacitated on the road for reasons yet unclear, and its driver, later identified by authorities, found themselves walking along the highway near Oak Knoll Avenue. In a statement from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) – Napa Area, released to the public via Facebook, it was reported that the driver of a silver Toyota RAV4, named Kessler, was traveling southbound at about 55 mph when she came upon the scene.
Despite her attempts to avert disaster, Kessler was unable to stop her vehicle in time, consequently colliding with the stranded party. Due to the unexpected position of the stranded driver in the east portion of the roadway, along with the potential visual hindrance posed by the disabled vehicle's headlights, Kessler was taken by surprise and a collision ensued, which caused major front-end damage to her RAV4 and left the other party with critical injuries, the report detailed how the Toyota RAV4 sustained severe damage in the encounter and Kessler, the driver experienced the shock of the incident, though there were no signs she was under the influence at the time of the accident.
An off-duty Sonoma County Sheriff's Deputy who had previously seen the victim in another location on the road stopped to provide medical assistance. Despite these lifesaving efforts, the victim succumbed to their injuries on the scene. The CHP noted that the victim's involvement in the roadway remains a subject of inquiry, as does their state of sobriety at the time of the incident, although Kessler showed no indications of impaired driving.
This accident is still being investigated by the California Highway Patrol Napa Area.
