Tax season can be a stressful time, but some Bexar County residents might catch a break thanks to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Until April 15, those earning up to $60,000 can get their taxes prepared free of charge at 13 sites across the county, as reported by San Antonio Report. This community boon has lent a hand to over 12,600 local residents since January 15 and has saved filers nearly $2.8 million in tax prep fees.
The VITA service, launched on January 17, doesn't only ease the wallets of taxpayers, it delivers the promise of consummate professionalism. Certified tax preparers, having undergone extensive training, offer tailored experiences rivaling any for-profit tax office, as United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County revealed. Now, even refund anticipation loans, with no fees or interest, are available at select locations for those wanting a swift advance on their returns.
In her statement to the San Antonio Report, Stephanie Smith, the head of the Strong Individuals and Families program at United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, emphasized the community-centric spirit of the initiative. "We wanted to make sure we could get more people in the door that would be eligible and qualify. It was an easy decision, because the more we can serve, the better," she said. This year, they've upped the income limit from $55,000 to $60,000, enabling broader access.
And it's not simply about saving on fees. Tax filers at VITA have already claimed upwards of $20.74 million in refunds. In a statement obtained by San Antonio Report, Smith highlighted the impact, "More people are aware of it, but there are still people who [pay]. The more we can get the word out, the better." A hefty $200 saving per return can make a significant difference to the household budget for many.
Before rushing to one of these helping havens, taxpayers should arm themselves with tax documents such as W-2s, 1099s, and photo IDs. Both spouses must be present for joint filings, and some patience may be needed—a small price for the saving on offer. Those pressed for time can opt to drop documents off and regroup with their preparer later, at locations like Palo Alto College and The Neighborhood Place.
Those in Bexar County interested in learning more or those who still need to get their paperwork in order can find details on the VITA service offerings, including locations and requirements, by visiting the San Antonio Report's information page or reaching out directly to Catholic Charities of San Antonio to book a mobile VITA team. AARP members, without an income cap, also have free tax prep options until the program's deadline. For details, take a gander at the list provided by the San Antonio Report.
