After a four-year-long investigation, police have apprehended a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of 51-year-old Miguel Aguila. Norman R. Randell, 22, faces murder charges following a deadly chase that ended in tragedy on Lockwood Drive in 2020. The Houston Police Department confirmed that Randell was taken into custody by the Northeast Crime Suppression Team on March 8th as reported by the City of Houston News.
Details given by HPD Homicide Division Detectives J. Brown and M. Condon revealed an intense scenario that began unfolding late in the evening on March 1, 2020. It is reported that upon noticing his white Ford F-250 pickup truck being stolen, Aguila and two witnesses embarked on a pursuit that was soon to go fatally wrong. They caught up to the suspect vehicle at Lockwood Drive and Market Street, where Aguila approached the driver's side. As he held on, the driver, now identified as Randell, attempted to quickly drive off, resulting in a U-turn that would eventually lead to a catastrophic end for Aguila.
The chase ended with the stolen truck careening off the road into a cemetery in the 1300 block of Lockwood, where Aguila was fatally injured after falling from the vehicle, as per the City of Houston News. The truck's rampage continued until it crashed at an intersection, at which point Randell and two others fled on foot. The image of the suspect and the details surrounding the incident paint a grim picture of the events that transpired on that fateful night.
The murder charge was filed in the 482nd State District Court following Randell's arrest earlier this month. The HPD has also released a booking photo of the suspect, providing a face to accompany the name that lingered unsolved in this case for years.
